We're back with another edition of Ask a Derm where you have skin care questions and we have dermatologists. This week's question comes from @char.ity.w.
Question: What’s the difference between expensive skin serums like Vitamin C and super high end ones? Is it worth the benefit to pay for the higher price ones or is there some diminishing return?
Dermatologist #1 (My dad): Cheaper ingredients like generics may be the same drug but the ability of your skin to absorb them may be diminished. Absorption rates may vary but it makes a difference when absorption rates are between 92% and 94%. Usually, you get what you pay for.
Dermatologist #2 (My older brother): You get what you pay for many times but not all times. Generally speaking, cheaper products don’t deliver the same level of efficacy when you’re talking about antioxidants like Vitamin C.
There you have it. The power is in the ingredients and, more often than not, that comes at a cost.
